Giovanni Bosco (1815-1888), the man portrayed in this sculpture, was popularly known as Don Bosco. He was an Italian Roman Catholic priest, educator and writer of the 19th century. He is shown with two children here, and this bronze-patinated plaster sculpture was the model for the 1935 marble sculpture to commemorate him.
